Valentine's Day Scams And Tips To Avoid Them: Leesburg Police

LEESBURG, VA — The Leesburg Police Department warned residents about potential romance scams ahead of Valentine's Day on Sunday. There are a few warning signs to look for when dealing with potential partners from online dating sites, according to a news release from the Leesburg Police Department.

On dating sites and apps, scammers may use photos of people on the internet to create a fake profile to lure in unsuspecting victims. Scammers use attractive photos and emotional leverage to gain money from victims, police said.

To protect residents from these scams, the Leesburg Police Department outlined a few warning signs that can indicate that your new match on a dating app could be a scammer.

• They ask for money or presents, often in the form of gift cards.
• They're never able to meet in person, and cancel any planned meetings with you
• They undergo an emergency and require money from you immediately. Some scammers may say the money is needed to pay police officials.

In 202o, Americans lost more than $300 million to romance scams, according to the FTC. The FTC estimates that about half of the money was lost in scams that began on social.
