Bill Clinton improving but must stay in hospital overnight amid infection

Former President Bill Clinton’s condition is improving, but he will remain in a California hospital until at least Saturday, after a urological infection sidelined him for most of the week, according to a rep.

“All health indicators are trending in the right direction, including his white blood count which has decreased significantly,” Angel Ureña, a spokesman for Clinton, said in a statement.

“In order to receive further IV antibiotics, he will remain in the hospital overnight.

“President Clinton continues to be in excellent spirits, and is deeply grateful for the outstanding care he is receiving and the well wishes that people have sent from across America and around the world.”

Clinton, 75, has been recovering since he went into the University of California Irvine Medical Center on Tuesday, according to doctors.

His wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was by his side for the second day in a row, but the couple’s daughter, Chelsea, hadn’t made the trip out to the West Coast, according to The Associated Press.

President Joe Biden spoke to Clinton on the phone Friday and said his predecessor was “doing fine” and would be out of the hospital soon.

“He’s not in any serious condition,” Biden said. “He is getting out shortly as I understand. Whether that’s tomorrow or the next day I don’t know.”

He said the two presidents spoke about getting together.

“I’m going to come over and have some lunch and talk,” Biden said. “He was very encouraging about why he thought the policies I was pursuing made sense but we didn’t get into much detail, except I was mainly just seeing how he was doing.”

The ex-commander-in-chief was hit with a urinary-tract infection that spread to his bloodstream, according to his doctors. But he never went into septic shock and did not receive ICU treatment even though he was staying in the ICU unit, an aide told the AP.
