Some YouTube challenges, like the lip sync challenge that had police departments across the nation trying to one-up each other, are good-natured fun; others are considered by many to be dumb, if not deadly.

A Detroit mother tells WJBK-TV, Fox 2 News her 12-year-old daughter, Timiyah Landers, nearly died after taking on what has been called the "fire challenge," a dare that involves participants filming as they douse themselves in rubbing alcohol, light themselves on fire and jump into a tub, shower or other water source to extinguish the flames.

Timiyah, along with two friends, lit herself on fire while her mom was taking a nap on Friday Aug. 17, according to an online Go Fund Me fundraiser set up by the 12-year-old's mother, Brandi Owens, to offset medical bills.

A photo on the fundraiser website shows the 12-year-old lying in a hospital bed wrapped entirely in white gauze and bandages.

Owens writes that her daughter is expected to endure at lest three more surgeries and will need to remain hospitalized for several months.

Tamiyah suffered burns to 49 percent of her body, Fox 2 News reports.
