Out of Africa: One refugee-turned-legislator should learn from another

Born in the Horn of Africa 37 years ago during a time of war, the young girl had to flee her country, becoming a refugee and settling in a free land that welcomed newcomers.

The member of a black minority in a land of immigrants, she learned a new language, went to college and became the first woman of her background to win a seat in the national legislature.

Somalia-born Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, born Oct. 4, 1981, ought to meet Ethiopia-born Israeli Knesset Member Pnina Tamano-Shata, born three weeks later.

The latter can teach the former a thing or two about the values and importance of Israel.
