David Beckham has turned his hand to non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and was unveiled as new global ambassador for DigitalBits blockchain on Thursday, as he dips his toe into the water of cryptographic tokens.

An NFT is a distinct cryptographic token that cannot be replicated, which acts as a certificate of ownership for virtual items which cannot be swapped for anything else – allowing artists online to sell that ownership to those who want it.  

The former footballer, 46, revealed he had branched out into the Metaverse as he teased an announcement on his Instagram on Wednesday where he was seen kicking a virtual football, before sharing the news with fans.

David has joined a flurry of stars and brands who have taken an interest in the Metaverse, including Liam Payne, Paris Hilton and Nike.

Confirming the news on Instagram, David said: 'Stepping into an exciting new world today!!! Thrilled to start my journey in the metaverse with @digitalbitsorg.'

'So excited, huge things to come,' he added in another comment on the platform.  

David is set to embark on new projects to 'demonstrate the power and potential of DigitalBits blockchain technology', an announcement confirmed.

Through the partnership, he will launch a series of NFTs and other digital assets on DigitalBits blockchain, letting him connect with fans around the world while also promoting the 'eco-friendly' platform.
