DENVER (KDVR) – A pedestrian was struck and killed in the Baker neighborhood overnight Saturday and the suspect driver has been arrested.

Terrell Jones, 23, died from multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Denver coroner’s office, after being hit by a car traveling on Broadway Street near Ellsworth Avenue.

According to the Denver Police Department, the suspect driver, 19-year-old Avel Aguirre Sanchez, was transported to the hospital after the crash and released but is in custody and being held for investigation of vehicular homicide.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday, DPD received emergency calls about the crash. Broadway was shut down for several hours while authorities investigated the incident.

“There was a speeding vehicle, alone on the road, there was no traffic whatsoever, in any way, and then there was a collision, the sound of a collision, like [the] smack of something and a bunch of things breaking,” one witness who wished to remain anonymous told FOX31.

DPD and other state officials stressed the importance of taking extra care when driving over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
