NEW PALTZ, NY — A 20-year-old SUNY New Paltz student from Rochester was killed Monday while hiking in and around Hasbrouck Park in Kingston. The body of Katherine Vollmer was recovered Tuesday morning.

Vollmer was part of a group of SUNY New Paltz students that was hiking around the park's old cement caves and trails when they became lost and found themselves at the edge of a cliff, the Times Herald-Record reported.

Authorities said Vollmer slipped and fell 150 feet.

Rescuers made attempts to get down to her body Monday night but decided for safety's sake to wait until Tuesday morning to recover it, the Daily Freeman reported.

Muddy and rocky conditions made the recovery of Vollmer's body difficult, Kingston Fire Chief Mark Brown said.
