Losing her mother to cancer inspired Amanda Bathory to run Boston and raise money for cancer research.

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Amanda Bathory
Age: 41
From: Auburndale

I’m running the Boston Marathon for Dana-Farber to raise money for cancer research. I’ve seen countless people of all ages be diagnosed with cancer. Some are still battling, some are in remission and some lost their battle. Cancer doesn’t discriminate. You can be healthy, young, old, sick, etc., and still get cancer.

In September 2006, my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and was told she had roughly 4 months left to live but my mom was a fighter. I moved in with her and watched as she fought this horrible battle until she couldn’t any longer. I miss her smile, her voice, her sense of humor, her hugs. I miss the way she made everything feel better. I just miss her!

This will be my first marathon and I’m definitely nervous. But running 26.2 miles is NOTHING compared with what my mother went through mentally or physically. Even though she can’t physically be here I know she is cheering from above and giving me the strength I need to run and raise money for this cause. I want my kids to live in a cancer-free world.
