Meghan McCain Roasts Las Vegas Mayor’s Call to Open the City: The “Patient Zero” of Bad Politicians

Meghan McCain has some harsh words for the mayor of Las Vegas. This morning, The View co-host took aim at Mayor Carolyn Goodman, who advocated for opening up the city during a contentious interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper Wednesday night. McCain slammed Goodman for her combative attitude towards Cooper, as well as her refusal to provide social distancing guidelines in the event restrictions are lifted. “[She’s] the worst of the worst of the worst kind of politician in this country,” said McCain.

Last night, Goodman appeared on CNN to discuss her plan to reopen Las Vegas amid the coronavirus pandemic. The mayor offered up her city as a “control group” to test the effects of lifting restrictions, a decision that Cooper disagreed with. When he asked how social distancing would be enforced in a casino, Goodman insisted that business owners must figure it out for themselves. “That’s up to them to figure out,” she said. “That’s their job. That’s not the mayor’s job.”

Like Cooper, The View‘s co-hosts disagreed with Goodman’s stance. “This is the most insane thing I’ve ever heard,” said longtime moderator Whoopi Goldberg. “There might be a role for [Goodman] in the White House. She fits right in there,” joked Behar. “I wouldn’t set foot in a casino right now if they guaranteed me a blackjack every hand.”

But it was McCain who really slammed the Las Vegas mayor. “This is one of those interviews that went viral for all the wrong reasons,” she said on Thursday morning. McCain explained that she was “so flabbergasted” by Goodman’s response that she looked into the politician, and she was shocked to discover that, at 81, she’s among those most at risk of falling ill to COVID-19.

“She reminded me of one of those teachers in middle school you used to have that was such a jackass, and trying to talk to Anderson Cooper in this really reductive way,” she continued. “He was asking her really legitimate questions … and she said, ‘That’s not my job!’ You’re the mayor of Las Vegas! That’s exactly entirely your job to figure it out!”

McCain went on to say that the coronavirus pandemic has forced her to reckon with the fact that there are terrible people in office. “I’ve been having this existential awakening that there are really, really horrible people in office, and this woman, for me, is like patient zero,” she said. “But she’s just the worst example of someone — and she’ll probably end up losing something over this. Because, again, it was just so egregious.”
