The family of a Florida woman murdered in 2011 by a friend was awarded almost $495 million in damages.

Kalil McCoy, 20, was shot in the head by Frederick Lee Wade, 19, after the two quarreled about opening a car window. Her other friends dumped her body in the woods and lied about what happened, Newsweek reports.

McCoy’s family filed a civil lawsuit in 2013 claiming the three defendants caused them severe emotional distress.

Lynette Roebuck, McCoy’s mother, said the judgment will follow them for the rest of their lives. Wade, who was initially sentenced to life in prison but was given 45 years for second-degree murder after a retrial, will have the ruling over him even after he gets out of prison, Roebuck said. Wade said that he didn’t shoot McCoy intentionally and that the gun went off accidentally.

"Wade will still have a little bit of life left. But this will always be over your head. If you get a dime, it is not going to be your dime. It will be Kalil's dime," she said. "He still gets an opportunity to get out of prison and live. He could be 70 on a cane walking around to a park or movies. But my daughter can't do any of that. This will make a statement and let people know.”

Kennard Deshun Mahone and Jonathan Marichal Brooks, who were also named in the civil suit, pleaded guilty in 2012 to accessory for their roles in McCoy’s death. They were sentenced to one year in county jail and placed on probation for 12 years, according to Newsweek.

The judgment, which attorneys have said is one of the largest in history for a death or injury case in Florida, will likely not be paid in full.
