Michael Chabon has been named the showrunner on “Star Trek: Picard” at CBS All Access.
“‘Star Trek’ has been an important part of my way of thinking about the world, the future, human nature, storytelling and myself since I was ten years old,” said Chabon. “I come to work every day in a state of joy and awe at having been entrusted with the character and the world of Jean-Luc Picard, with this vibrant strand of the rich, intricate and complex tapestry that is ‘Trek.’”
Chabon has been a part of the show’s creative team since it was announced last year. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of novels such “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay,” “Moonglow,” “Wonder Boys,” and “The Yiddish Policeman’s Union.” He also wrote the “Star Trek: Short Treks” episode “Calypso.”
The new series will see Sir Patrick Stewart reprise the iconic role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard. Little is known about the plot of the series other than it is said to tell the story of the next chapter of Picard’s life. Stewart played Picard for seven seasons on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” in addition to appearing in four “Star Trek” films.
In addition to Stewart, the series will star Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway. “Picard” will air exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States and will be distributed concurrently internationally by CBS Studios International on Amazon Prime Video and in Canada on Bell Media’s cable networks, Space and Z, and OTT service Crave.
Stewart, Alex Kurtzman, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, James Duff, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers. Aaron Baiers serves as co-executive producer and Kirsten Beyer as supervising producer. Hanelle Culpepper will direct the first two episodes of the series.
“Picard” is slated to debut later this year. It is the latest in a growing line of series that CBS is rolling out to build up a new “Star Trek” TV universe. In addition to “Star Trek: Discovery,” which just concluded its second season on All Access, upcoming shows include the animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and an untitled Nickelodeon animated series as well. A drama series centered on Michelle Yeoh’s character from “Discovery” is also currently in development at All Access.
