Former minor leaguer Miguel Marte dies from coronavirus at age 30

Miguel Marte, a former minor league baseball player in the Oakland A’s organization, died from coronavirus Tuesday. He was 30 years old.

Marte, who was in the A’s system from 2008-2012, had been working in New Jersey as a truck driver, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The A’s shared the news Friday in a tweet.

Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Marte was 18 years old in his first professional season. He bounced around the lower levels of the team’s system, hitting .251 in 813 plate appearances. He spent his final year with the A’s in low-A ball playing for the Vermont Lake Monsters.

Marte is survived by his wife, Jasmin, and their children, twins Isabella and Miguel Angel. A GoFundMe has been set up for the family.
