Never say never.
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone went to bat this week for shortstop Gleyber Torres during an interview with YES Network.
Torres struggled at shortstop in 2020 and could move back to second base next season if Yankees general manager Brian Cashman makes a bold move like trading for Cleveland Indians’ Francisco Lindor.
Boone said he’s fine with moving Torres, if that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
“I know we can move him back over to second base and he’s going to be really good over there,’' Boone said in a recent YES Network interview, per the New York Daily News. “But I still feel like there’s a chance that he can become a really good shortstop for us moving forward. It’s a demanding and difficult position and I think sometimes we lose sight of just how young Gleyber is and how much success he’s had at such a young age at the big-league level.’'
If Torres moves back to second base, that could mean one of two things: either the Yankees re-signed DJ LeMahieu and are planning to move him to first base, or the Yankees didn’t re-sign LeMahieu and let him walk as a free agent, meaning Luke Voit remains entrenched as the starter at first.
