For many, a trip to the beach is one of summer’s greatest pastimes. Whether running across the beach and into the water or taking a leisurely stroll across the sand, many take a visit to Long Island Sound for granted as a rite of summer.
But for some, the beach can be a foreboding place with its hot, shifting sands and difficult access into the water. Massachusetts-based SMILE Mass (Small Miracles in Life Exist) is hoping to make going to the beach easier with the donation of floating beach wheelchairs to Fairfield, Norwalk and Westport – the first recipients in the state. SMILE has donated more than 130 wheelchairs throughout New England.
The company notes the wheelchairs, which resemble beach recliners and float in the water, have large shock-absorbing wheels that maneuver easily over the sand. Those using the chairs in Long Island Sound will be able to use the buoyant properties of salt water for physical therapy.
The company was founded in 2010 by Sudbury, Mass. residents Lotte Diomede and Susan Brown and “is dedicated to improving the lives of disabled persons and the people around them.” Diomede said creating “recreational outings without barriers” is one of the organization’s prime objectives.
“Nothing makes us happier than creating recreational opportunities for disabled children, adults and their families,” Diomede said. “These chairs allow wheelchair-bound children to float comfortably in the ocean, perhaps for the first time. They also make it possible for non-ambulatory adults to access and enjoy the beach, which is otherwise nearly impossible.”
Brown said family vacations with some physically challenged members “can be complicated, expensive, and frustrating.”
“Disabilities and caregiving can be very stressful and it’s important for all families to take pleasant, relaxing breaks together from time to time,” she said.
Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe said the wheelchairs will complement new sidewalks and “Mobi-Mats,” carpet-like coverings that provide stable footing over the sand at the town’s Sound beaches.
“These special wheelchairs will provide access for many who otherwise may not have the opportunity to enjoy Westport’s crown jewels,” he said.
