A stop work order is in place at the Walterdale Bridge construction site in Edmonton after a workplace-related death earlier this week.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) spokesperson Lauren Welsh said a worker — a man believed to be in his 60s — was found unconscious at the site on Tuesday. He was transported to hospital and has since died, she said Thursday morning.

Welsh said the man’s injuries appeared to be related to some sort of “contact with a vehicle or equipment,” but the nature of the contact is still undetermined.

OHS officers have been on site since Tuesday, Welsh said.

OHS couldn’t say what type of work was being done at the bridge at the time of the incident.

The City of Edmonton said it is aware of the incident but couldn’t provide any further details.

After years of delays, the new Walterdale Bridge opened last September.

In December, the lighting element on the bridge was turned on. At the time, the city said there was still work to be done on the trail connections.
