TalkTalk and BT go down for 90 minutes leaving thousands working from home without access to the internet

  • 95 per cent of issues reported by TalkTalk customers were related to the internet
  • Similarly, 92 per cent of BT user complaints related to internet problems
  • The outage was nationwide and affected thousands of users across UK
  • It lasted from around 10am to around 11:30am BST and has now been resolved

Thousands of Britons working from home were left without internet this morning as TalkTalk and BT broadband crashed across the UK.

Tens of thousands of users reported issues with their internet, according to outage tracking site DownDetector.

The vast majority of reported issues related to internet connectivity problems and difficulty accessing websites.

Both BT and TalkTalk make use of the vast Openreach network, but it is unknown if the two outages are related.

Although now resolved, the problem was with the suppliers themselves and not the infrastructure as Openreach told MailOnline it had no issues on its network today.

Tens of thousands of users were hit by the nationwide outage, with a high concentration of reports coming from Glasgow, Derby, Birmingham and London.

Reports of problems surfaced for both companies around 10:10am and then a deluge of complaints saw the number of people having issues surge rapidly.

The total number of complaints at the peak of the internet outage saw in excess of 30,000 reports for TalkTalk and 2,000 for BT.

A TalkTalk spokesperson told MailOnline the issue was resolved shortly after 11:40am BST.

In a statement, the company said: 'We're aware that some customers were unable to access certain websites for a short period earlier today.

'The issue has now been resolved and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.'

Despite thousands of customer-reported issues appearing on DownDetector, a BT spokesperson told MailOnline 'there are no major nor National outages for BT Broadband customers'.

The ill-timed outage came as millions of Britons are still working home amid the coronavirus pandemic, leaving many workers stranded.

Twitter was inundated with disgruntled internet users bemoaning their supplier.

Several users pointed out the bad timing of the drop in coverage, with one saying he would likely miss a work Zoom call.

Another complained of having no way to report issues and one wrote: 'Note to self, find another internet provider. @TalkTalk is down AGAIN!'
