Unfortunately for Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock that old friend was Dominic Cummings.

Catch up on the pick of our analysis of that dramatic hearing - and seven other stories you may have missed.

Cummings on COVID

As a senior figure in Downing Street during the early days of the pandemic, he had a unique view of what was going on. You can read his inside story here. Those who he attacked, like Matt Hancock, say his claims are unsubstantiated - so who is telling the truth?

Privacy trailblazer or enemy of the press?

Max Mosley died this week. "Enemy of the free press", was the Sun newspaper's caustic description of the former Formula 1 boss. Other UK tabloids also pulled no punches. It's a testament of the 81-year-old's impact on the red tops and his legacy outside of the world of motorsport; to many, he will be remembered as the man who took on the News Of The World and won.
