Two plea hearings fall through in killing of Portland State athlete Deante Strickland, shooting of family

Deante Strickland

Deante Strickland, 22, a football and basketball player at Portland State University, died after he was shot in the chest during a visit to his grandmother’s house in the 6200 block of Northeast 42nd Avenue on Aug. 2, 2019.

Deante Strickland’s family showed up in court Tuesday expecting to hear a guilty plea from his sister in the 2019 shooting that left the well-known Portland athlete dead and his grandmother and aunt wounded.

But they walked out devastated when the plea arrangement fell apart as defendant Tamena Strickland told a judge that she didn’t understand the deal.
