Harrisburg landlords are prohibited from evicting residents while the city is operating under a disaster declaration, Mayor Eric Papenfuse announced Wednesday.
“The City of Harrisburg understands that individuals may have trouble paying their rent promptly in the midst of this health crisis. We will not make matters worse by allowing landlords to evict during this disaster emergency,” Papenfuse said in a statement.
The city is mandating a temporary suspension of eviction ejectment or displacement of any residential property tenant or occupant, including those that live in rooming houses, whose ability to pay rent has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The city’s declaration is in accordance with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court order of a statewide judicial emergency, which was issued on March 18, 2020.
Harrisburg Codes Administrator Dave Patton is contacting landlords in the city about the declaration.
Anyone with questions or concerns can contact the code bureau by calling the 311 helpdesk or emailing codes@harrisburgpa.gov.
As of Wednesday, Pennsylvania has confirmed 1,127 cases of the coronavirus, with 276 new cases reported, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. 10 cases have been reported in Dauphin County, however, no data has been released regarding what municipalities the cases are in.
