Flood Warning For Parts Of NoVA, 2018 Wettest Year On Record

A flood warning is in effect for parts of NoVA and Washington, DC. 2018 is officially the wettest year on record, the Weather Service says.

WASHINGTON, DC — It's official, but probably not a surprise to anyone in northern Virginia that 2018 was the wettest year on record, and both a flood warning and flood watch are in effect for parts of NoVA and Washington, D.C., the National Weather Service says. At 6:26 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, the record for the wettest calendar year on record was set at Reagan National Airport with a total of 61.34 inches of rain received in the area, which broke the record set in 1889.

But the record will go up with more rain drenching the DC region this weekend, and possibly later this month. A flood watch took effect at noon Saturday and continues until 6 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16. A flood watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. Anyone living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding occur, forecasters warn.

A flood warning is now in effect until 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, for the District of Columbia along with parts of Loudoun and Fairfax County in northern Virginia, plus Arlington County, the City of Falls Church and the city of Alexandria.
