HERNDON, VA -- The Herndon High School band will be flying to France on Tuesday to participate in the 75th D-Day celebrations in Normandy, according to a report.

WTOP reports that band members will carry pictures and stories of crew members who had served aboard the USS Herndon, which participated in the June 6, 1944 invasion that served as a turning point in World War II.

The story quotes Margaret Jamborsky -- whose daughter plays in the Pride of Herndon Marching Band -- who says she was able to track down the families of 293 of the 301 men who served on the vessel.

The USS Herndon was no ordinary ship: it was the lead ship of the Allied armada, according to the report.

Three of the students will wear original dress blues from sailors aboard the USS Herndon, and they will take an American flag that flew on the ship.
