Redskins Sign Quarterback Mark Sanchez

The Washington Redskins signed quarterback Mark Sanchez as a backup, NBC Sports reports.

Colt McCoy is in line to start Thursday at the Dallas Cowboys after Alex Smith broke his right leg in Sunday's 23-21 loss to the Houston Texans.

Sanchez knows offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh from their time with the New York Jets. Sanchez, 32, was on the Chicago Bears roster in 2017 but did not get on the field in a game.

He came into the league with the New York Jets in 2009 after playing his college ball at the University of Southern California.

The team also brought in Kellen Clemens, T.J. Yates, EJ Manuel and Josh Johnson as backup candidates before signing Sanchez.

McCoy threw for a touchdown Sunday in his first pass in a regular-season game since 2015. His last start came in 2014, the same season he beat Dallas on the road on Monday night.
