STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Egger's Homemade Ice Cream, one of the borough's most iconic frozen treats, officially opened their Historic Richmond Town site for the summer season on Friday, Apr. 26.

"Egger's Ice Cream is officially back for the season, open until October or November, depending on the weather, open seven days a week," said owner Danielle Raleigh.

The Historic Richmond Town ice cream shop, located in the diner building on the historic campus, will be open Sunday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

All the Classics

The small outdoor shop, featuring a recently renovated picnic seating area, offers everything Egger's fans have grown to love from the historic creamery.

"We have all of our ice cream, all of our classics. Anything and everything that Egger's [on Forest Avenue] has, we have there," said Raleigh.

On Saturday, hundreds of Staten Islanders shuffled around the grounds of Historic Richmond Town during the International Chili Society's NYC Chili Cook-Off, with patrons often cooling their taste buds from the hot chili with freezing cold ice cream.

Orders ranged from hot fudge-topped sundaes to classic root beer floats and everything in between, as guests of all ages enjoyed their favorite summer treats.

Egger's Candy Shoppe

In addition to the seasonal opening of the outdoor ice cream shop, Egger's announced the grand opening of Egger's Candy Shoppe, offering over 150 types of old-fashioned candy, a variety of coffee drinks and baked goods, as well as locally-crafted, Staten Island-oriented merchandise.

"What people were asking for is more candy, but also some more adult stuff too. Adults wanted cappuccinos and bakery items. They wanted to and be able to just walk around and sit on a bench with their elderly mother. They wanted something more than just ice cream so this is really our first step into that," said Raleigh.

Egger's Candy Shoppe, located in Historic Richmond Town's courthouse building, will be open seven days a week, on Sunday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Candy, Coffee and More

The walls of the candy shop are lined with 150 old-fashioned candies, with bakery items provided daily by Mark's Bake Shop.

An array of delicious coffee beverages are available, helping parents keep up with their sugar-rushed children running around the historic grounds.

Partnerships have been made with local businesses, like Cookies and Candles, to give small businesses a chance to get their products in front of the public.

"If there are Staten Islanders who wrote books, or Staten Islanders who make Staten Island things, I would love to hear from them. I want this to be a place where people can come and support local," said Raleigh.

"We're lucky because Egger's has such great name recognition that my friend, who wants to sell his cutting boards... How do you get people to buy cutting boards? Well if you put it in here, people see it and you encourage them to buy local," Raleigh continued.

More than just a shop

Raleigh plans to use the space not only to sell candy, coffee and crafted goods, but to offer recreational space and host community events, with six tables set to be placed outside the shop, in front of the courthouse, sometime next week.

"Starting in June we will offer tea time on Sundays and I think people are going to be really excited about that," said Raleigh.

"You don't have to go to Manhattan to the Carlyle to have tea time. You can come right here to Historic Richmond Town. We're going to serve you a pot of tea, with a three-tier stand, with scones, tea sandwiches and sweets, and you can sit right here and look out at the beautiful site," Raleigh continued.

Additionally, Egger's Candy Shoppe will offer weekly yoga on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"We want to cater not just to the kids, but to the moms. So to the mom's that have kids, you can bring your kids and we're going to do activities with them for an hour and you can relax and do yoga, all while being just a few feet away," Raleigh said.
