“Notting Hill” actor Tony Armatrading is dead at age 59, according to the Daily Mail.
“‘Very sad news. My dearest friend Tony Armatrading died of cancer an hour ago,” friend and fellow actor Tim Bentinck wrote on Twitter Monday, along with a photo of Armatrading with his wife Suzan Crowley.
“I had the privilege of being his best man, and loved him dearly. He was a wonderful actor, and a true friend. This pic of him with Suzy and (their pet dog) Dash taken last night.”
Armatrading was a stage and screen actor, with memorable roles in “Notting Hill” (as a security guard who won’t let Hugh Grant see Julia Roberts on the set of her film), “The Saint” (as a customs officer), and on the British series “Angels,” “Grange Hill” and “Chalkface.” He also voiced Xalek in several “Star Wars: The Old Republic” video games and made appearances on U.S. TV shows “Monk,” “NCIS,” and “Prison Break.”
His most recent role was as Claypool on two episodes of “Hawaii Five-0” last year.
Armatrading, born in 1961 in Birmingham, England, had reportedly been living in Los Angeles for his acting career. He was the younger brother of UK singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading, a three-time Grammy nominee known for songs like “Love and Affection,” “The Weakness in Me,” “Drop the Pilot,” “Me Myself I” and “Kind Words (And a Real Good Heart).”
