Syracuse, N.Y. -- High-end apartments now fill the top floor of the former Marsellus Casket Co. factory in Syracuse.

James Ranalli, owner of United Auto Supply and a local developer, recently turned the remains of the former casket factory at 101 Richmond Ave. into a mixed-used building.

Commercial space fills the first five floors of Marsellus Commons, with American Medical Response ambulance service and Verisma Systems, a provider of disclosure management services, the anchor tenants.

Ranalli this week is completing seven apartments - two two-bedroom and five one-bedroom units - on the top floor of the six-story building.

The apartments range in size from 913 to 1,104 square feet and feature tile floors, granite counter tops and stainless-steel appliances, breakfast bars, tiled showers with glass doors, and a washer and dryer in each unit.

Monthly rents range from $1,440 to $1,960 and include heat and on-site parking.

Ranalli also plans to build a roof-top deck for the exclusive use of residential tenants.

Marsellus Casket, founded by John Marsellus, made fine wooden caskets at the site from 1889 until moving to DeWitt in 1990. In 2010, arsonists set fire to the building, destroying all but a six-story concrete section.

Ranalli acquired the property from the city in a tax sale in 2013. He redeveloped the six-story tower and also built an addition to the first floor for American Medical Response.

Other than the Marsellus name on the sign, though, there are no other reminders of the building's past as a casket factory.
