Scottish rugby star Siobhan Cattigan dead at 26

Scottish rugby player Siobhan Cattigan died last week, her Stirling club confirmed.

Cattigan, known by her teammates as “Shibby,” was 26. A cause of death has not yet been released.

“Shibby has been a big part of County for many years and will be hugely missed by everyone at the club,” the statement read, adding that Cattigan was an “inspiration” to young athletes.

“Scottish Rugby is deeply saddened to hear Scotland international Siobhan Cattigan has died,” the Scottish Rugby Union said in a statement. “The thoughts of all our people and players go out to Siobhan’s family and many teammates at Stirling County and Scotland at this incredibly difficult time.”

Fans and fellow rugby players have shared condolences and messages of support on social media.

The Italian Rugby Federation called Cattigan “a talented player and a great competitor” while rugby legend Sir Bill Beaumont said he is “deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing” in a tweet posted Wednesday.

“She was a fine player and an inspiration to many,” Beaumont wrote.

Cattigan made her international debut with Scotland in the 2018 Six Nations against Wales. The back-row won 19 caps between 2018 and 2021. More recently, she played in Scotland’s World Cup Europe qualifier against Spain in September.

Cattigan studied criminology and sociology at the University of Stirling before she received a master’s degree in sports psychology.
