Donald Trump Jr. has found himself the subject of mockery on Twitter after an interview in which he described Democrats as "left of commie" shortly after accusing the party of McCarthyism.

Speaking to Fox News's Jesse Watters on Saturday evening, the president's eldest son lashed out at his father's opponents during a discussion on the ongoing Russia probe. His series of statements immediately prompted a social media backlash.

"You see the Democratic senators [saying], 'This is McCarthyism.' I'm, like, What? You have a guy screaming, 'Russia, Russia, Russia' with no evidence," Trump Jr. said in the interview, suggesting the Democrats' accusations were akin to McCarthyism.

"All this shade for 18 months, screaming about McCarthyism. I mean, the irony is ridiculous at this point," he added.

Apparently missing the irony of his statement, the president's eldest son said, "The problems is, rather than being reasonable and coming to the table, [the Democrats have] forced themselves further and further and further left.

"I mean, they're left of commie right now, and that's a real problem for them because I don't think that's what America wants," Trump Jr. added.

His statements were immediately picked up by Twitter users, who were quick to point out that Senator Joseph McCarthy accused and questioned people he suspected of being Communists without being able to provide substantial evidence to back up his claims.

"Joe McCarthy was a Wisconsin Republican who accused government officials of being communist in the 1950s. So Don Jr. is practicing McCarthyism while accusing Democrats of McCarthyism," CNN commentator Keith Boykin tweeted.

It's not the first time Trump Jr.'s political statements have been questioned on Twitter. Social media users hit out after he posted a picture on the site of his 3-year-old daughter, Chloe, who was dressed as a police officer for Halloween, and joked that he was going to take half her candy to teach her about socialism.

"I'm going to take half of Chloe's candy tonight & give it to some kid who sat at home. It's never too early to teach her about socialism," Trump Jr. wrote, sharing the picture. However, his joke backfired as social media users suggested his statement did not add up.

You mean the candy that she got for free out of the goodness of strangers' hearts? 😂😂😂
