Michigan Coronavirus Cases Increase By Nearly 600 On Friday

The state also reported that three more people have died from the coronavirus.

MICHIGAN — The number of coronavirus cases in Michigan increased by nearly 600 Friday, according to the most recent data provided by state health officials.

Michigan reported 594 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the state's coronavirus case total to 76,541. The state also reported three more people have died from the respiratory illness, bringing Michigan's total of deaths attributed to the virus to 6,151.

The state had reported 699 coronavirus cases on Thursday, while adding seven new deaths due to the virus. The state coronavirus website reports that more than 55,000 people in Michigan have recovered from the virus as of last week.

Michigan ranks 14th in the U.S. in coronavirus cases as of Friday, according to data gathered and provided by the World Health Organization. The group, which also utilizes probable cases and deaths, reports that Michigan ranks seventh in the nation in coronavirus deaths. The state has ranked as high as third in both cases and deaths at various points during the coronavirus pandemic.

Michigan is one of many states determining when and how it can return to in-person instruction at its grade school programs. In Detroit, some students have returned to face-to-face instruction during summer school classes, a move that has been met with some resistance and controversy.

On Thursday, school officials said two students attending in-person classes had tested positive for the coronavirus while the district was conducting mandatory testing ordered by a judge.

The U.S. leads the world in coronavirus cases, reporting well over 4.2 million cases of the virus as of Friday morning, according to the World Health Organization. Data from the health group submits that in the U.S., nearly 148,000 people have died from the respiratory illness. Nearly 2 million people in the U.S. have recovered from the coronavirus.

Over 15.8 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. More than 639,000 people around the globe have died from the virus as of Friday morning, while over 9.6 million people have recovered from the virus.
