Saudi Arabia has replaced a son of King Salman—who reportedly assured Jamal Khashoggi that the consulate in Istanbul was safe for him—as ambassador to the United States. Prince Khalid bin Salman will now serve as a deputy defense minister in the kingdom, the Associated Press reported. Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud, daughter of a longtime ambassador to Washington, will fill the post, becoming Saudi Arabia’s first female ambassador. Her appointment comes as relations between the U.S. and the kingdom have deteriorated over the killing of Khashoggi. Prince Khalid’s brother, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, ordered the dissident journalist killed, the CIA has concluded. After Khashoggi’s disappearance, Khalid claimed Khashoggi simply left the Istanbul consulate of his own accord.
