DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — As residents cope with feelings of stress, anxiety and restlessness during Governor J.B. Pritzker's new coronavirus stay-at-home order, the DuPage county branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is finding unique ways to offer support.

These measures include offering video visits to replace in-person support groups, NAMI DuPage Executive Director Geri Kerger said in an open letter on the organization's website. Kerger wrote, "At this time, we are especially concerned with the needs of our support group participants as well as the needs of the broader community. "

Those needing support during this challenging time can go online to remotely attend one of the many NAMI DuPage support groups via Zoom conferencing. The groups offer support for those who are in recovery or dealing with their own or a family member's mental illness. The online format also offers a way to feel connected for those feeling uncertain or lonely at this time.

Living Room

In the wake of Pritzker's order, the NAMI DuPage Living Room will be the only onsite program to continue until further notice.

NAMI DuPage will keep its Living Room open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday during the current stay-at-home order. The Living Room, which serves residents 18 and older, offers a place for those coping with symptoms of mental illness to talk with peer counselors in a calming, non-clinical setting.
