The Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, will host an electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Bank of the San Juans, Ninth and Royal Gorge Boulevard location. This is the bank on the southwest corner of the intersection; the old train depot.
Attendees are asked to pay using cash or check; no credit or debit cards will be accepted at the event.
Residents attending should enter the parking lot from Ninth Street or Eighth Street. They will circle around the building and enter the offload area from the south side of the building. There may be a line, please be patient.
At the event:
1. Please stay in the vehicle. This ensures safety AND that the line moves quickly.
2. First, someone will check the load and calculate the cost. They will give a total. DO NOT pay that person. This will allow time to get the payment ready.
3. A second person will take the payment; pay with cash and check (payable to “UAACOG”). The Organization cannot accept credit/debit cards.
4. Watch to be flagged into the offload area. Once flagged into that area, make sure that volunteers can access the recyclables. They will unload the vehicle as quickly as possible.
5. Those who have a large load, please plan on coming during the first hour of the event. Those with smaller loads, please wait to come until after 10 a.m.
During the event, prices will vary, but a few examples are: CPU’s, $5, Desktop Printers, $5, Microwaves, $5, and fluorescent tube bulbs will be taken for a fee of .50/foot. No air conditioners, freezers or refrigerators will be accepted. LED/LCD Monitors are $10 to recycle. There is a fixed cost for televisions: $20 for 26” and smaller televisions. The cost to recycle a television 27” and larger is $30. Big screen televisions can be recycled for $40. Smoke detectors can also be recycled for $5 and cell phones and rechargeable batteries at no charge.
Colorado implemented an electronics landfill ban in July 2013, with the passage of SB12-133. Banned electronic devices include television sets, central processing units (CPUs), computer monitors, peripherals, printers, fax machines, laptops, notebooks, ultrabooks, netbooks, electronic tablets, digital video-disc (DVD) players, radios, stereos, video game consoles and video display devices with screens greater than four inches diagonally.
Waste electronics and computers from residential and non-residential sources cannot be disposed of in solid waste landfills in Colorado. Harmful chemicals can leach out of this waste and contaminate soil and groundwater. Electronics will be recycled by Southern Colorado Recyclers, a Colorado-registered electronics recycler, as required by Colorado law. All electronics will be recycled responsibly and all hard drives are shredded to ensure privacy.
