It seems like the New York Mets did the right thing when they parted ways with right-hander Matt Harvey last season.
The Los Angeles Angels cut The Dark Knight Friday, too, after he compiled a 3-5 mark with a 7.09 ERA in 12 starts this season.
Harvey was signed by the Reds last season after the Mets designated him, and the Angels signed him and gave him an $11 million, one-year contract prior to the season.
“The decision was made because we felt like it would increase our chance of winning games,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said after discussing the move with general manager Billy Eppler. “Matt was a very well-liked teammate, a guy that everyone pulled for, including myself. But we’re in the business of winning baseball games. In talking to Billy, we just felt like this was the best move to make in order to help us win games.”
Harvey’s fall from pitching greatness is a head scratcher. He was one of baseball’ most dominant starters when he pitched for the Mets and started the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field.
However, he experienced elbow troubles later that season and had other health issues since then and has never been the same on the mound.
He was sidelined this season for almost two months with a strained back, but struggled in his two starts since his return.
