Walking around Lafayette City Hall, you may see a new face.

Jeff Arthur, who has been working with the city of Boulder for the past 22 years, will begin his first day with Lafayette on Monday as the director of public works.

In May, Doug Short retired from the role after 20 years with Lafayette.

“It’s definitely an exciting community with a lot going on,” Arthur said. “I’m really excited to get a little hands-on with problem solving and working to help the community to evo

Previously, Arthur was the director of public works for utilities and was in charge of water, wastewater, stormwater and flood management for Boulder.

In Lafayette, he will be taking on all aspects of public works.

“This role is the full range. It’s transportation plus all the water related things,” Arthur said. “It’s a smaller overall community, but it has a broader range.”

City Administrator Fritz Sprague said he’s very excited Arthur will be joining the team.

“It’s a key position, and having someone with Jeff’s caliber will really benefit the residents of Lafayette,” Sprague said.

The position was open for a month, and the city received approximately 60 applications.

“We conducted a survey of public works employees, what attributes they were looking for in a leader,” Sprague said. “We were very deliberate with what we were looking for, we had the employees’ thoughts, we had conversations with other directors.”

Sprague said this is the first director he has hired since he was brought on board.

“When I started as city administrator six months ago, I was looking at all city departments,” Sprague said. “We started assessing how we do business and provide services. One of my goals over the next year is to really take the organization to the next level of performance.”
