Rep. Liz Cheney tore into her follow House Republicans Monday, accusing party leadership of having “enabled white nationalism, white supremacy, and anti-semitism.”
“History has taught us that what begins with words ends in far worse,” Cheney (R-Wyo.) tweeted less than 48 hours after Saturday’s racially motivated massacre at a Buffalo supermarket. “@GOP leaders must renounce and reject these views and those who hold them.”
Cheney did not call out specific members of Congress in the message, which she posted from her personal Twitter account rather than her congressional page.
However, two Republican lawmakers — Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona — have caused an outcry over their association with white nationalist groups.
In February of this year, Greene delivered a keynote address at a conference that was hosted by noted white supremacist Nick Fuentes and was held opposite the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida. Greene later claimed she had not been aware of Fuentes’ views, which include Holocaust denial and defenses of segregation.
Similarly, Gosar attended Fuentes’ America First Political Action Committee last year and was later censured by the House and stripped of his committee assignments after he posted a video depicting himself as an anime character assassinating far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and attacking President Biden.
Cheney’s post came almost exactly one year after she was ousted from her role as House Republican Conference chair in favor of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) following Cheney’s repeated criticism of former President Donald Trump and his role in last year’s Capitol riot.
The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney is one of two Republicans serving on the House select committee investigating that day’s events. Retiring Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois is the other.
In retaliation, Trump has thrown his support behind Cheney’s GOP primary challenger Harriet Hageman, who is hoping to deny Cheney a fourth House term.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Stefanik did not immediately respond to The Post’s requests for comment about Cheney’s post.
