Hessley Hempstead, former Detroit Lions offensive lineman in ’90s, reportedly dies at 49

ALLEN PARK -- Hessley Hempstead, a former Detroit Lions offensive lineman and seventh-round draft pick in the 1990s, died at 49 this past weekend per the NFL Players Association and his former high school.

The offensive guard from Upland, California played his college ball at the University of Kansas. He started 46 straight games for the Jayhawks, which was a then-school record. Hempstead was Pick 228 in 1995, the final selection of Detroit’s draft class featuring Luther Elliss, Stephen Boyd, David Sloan, and Cory Schlesinger, among others. Hempstead then appeared in 31 regular-season games, two postseason contests while making one start across three seasons for the Lions.

The NFLPA’s Former Players tweeted: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Hess Hempstead. After retiring from the Detroit Lions, he was a fixture at events and Charlotte Chapter activities, always with a smile and willingness to help his #NFLPAFraternity and community. He will be missed by all who knew him.”

Upland High School tweeted: “Class of 1990 Hessley Hempstead passed away Friday. Hessley was a man of inspiration, kindness and love. After graduating from Upland High, he attended Kansas and went on to play in the NFL for the Detroit Lions. Our love and prayers go out to the Hempstead family and friends.”
