Bryson DeChambeau Says He Had Surgery to Cure Vertigo

Bryson DeChambeau is known to constantly seek answers. Whether it's regarding his game or his health, the LIV Golf member will search relentlessly for the root cause of whatever question he needs addressed.

Recently DeChambeau had surgery, and the procedure reportedly cured an unsolved vertigo problem that he has battled for two years.

In an article on LIV Golf’s website, DeChambeau said that on Dec. 15 he had a retention cyst removed from his left maxillary sinus. Prior to the surgery, DeChambeau said that a full body MRI scan revealed that he had a major air-flow blockage in his nasal passage. According to Dr. Joseph Wyatt, an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist located in DeChambeau’s local Dallas area, the issue was preventing the former U.S. Open champion from getting the proper amount of oxygen to his brain.

Two years earlier, DeChambeau withdrew from the 2020 Masters while citing dizzy spells.

“To get that fixed, it’s been the greatest decision of my life,” DeChambeau said. “My energy level is so much better. My clarity of thought is way better. I don’t know if you can tell, but my speech is a lot more fluent and I’m not stopping as much or pitching as much like I used to last year and before...I feel like I’m back to 2018 me.”

Part of the reason that DeChambeau ordered a full-body MRI scan in the first place was his shaky 2022 season. The 29-year-old joined LIV Golf, but did not play well on the new circuit. His best LIV finish was a tie for 8th at the Saudi-backed league’s Chicago event.

After captivating fans with his dramatic weight gain in 2020, DeChambeau was open about his effort to slim down last season. For a moment, DeChambeau thought his new diet marked a turning point in his health, but apparently his sinus issue played a role in slowing him down.

“I tried being healthier, eating healthier, working out more, brain training and all that,” DeChambeau said. “None of it helped until I found out that my nose doesn’t have the proper airflow going through it.”

DeChambeau’s improved health has not yet paid off on the course. He missed the cut at the Asian Tour’s Saudi International on Friday, where fans spotted him using a new driver. DeChambeau—who for many years was under contract with Cobra—put the new TaylorMade Stealth 2 in play this week.

A Cobra representative told Sports Illustrated that, “Bryson is not currently under contract with Cobra or Puma. His contract was up at the end of the 2022 and discussions are ongoing.”

DeChambeau will make his next appearance LIV's Mexico event Feb. 24-26 the first LIV event of 2023.
