HS girls' basketball roundup

The Tottenville girls' basketball team improved to 3-0 in the PSAL with a 55-50 win over Curtis Thursday night.

Tottenville took over sole possession of first place in the division with a 55-50 Staten Island PSAL A victory over Curtis Thursday night at home.

The Pirates (3-0 in the league) were led by Gabrielle Avallone’s 21 points and Vanessa Parker’s 16.=

Tottenville led 28-26 at the halftime, but outscored the Warriors (2-1 in the league), 17-4, in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Njeri Brooks and Zaria Lewis scored 11 points apiece for Curtis.

“Tottenville played us in a zone the whole game and we struggled to make shots,” said Curtis coach Talia Sutton. “Our poor shooting, I believe, is contributed to our poor ball movement and our lack of movement without the ball. We absolutely need to move ball quicker and focus more on execution to win games.”

The Warriors, who outscored the Pirates 20-10 in the fourth period, also connected on only 6 of 15 free throws in the game.

“The team rallied together and defended home court,” said Sutton, whose team improved to 3-3. "Our full-court pressure defense and strong team effort led us to the win. This was a much-needed win after Thursday night’s tough loss (to Tottenville). We have a lot of basketball left to play, and will continue to prepare ourselves.

Curtis finished the game with 19 assists and 10 Warrior players scored.
