The Suburbanettes Baton Studio and Twirl Team from Chelmsford took home 12 Massachusetts State Championship team titles at the Massachusetts State and Open Championship Contest in Holyoke in March. These varied in categories including Beginner and Advanced Dancetwirl, Halftime Show, Danceline, and Pom Pom.
Individuals from the team also won various state events including solo, x-strut, basic march, military march, duet, trio, best appearing, modeling, 2-baton, and 3-baton. These age groups ranged from 0-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-plus. During individual events, the twirler goes out on the gym floor in front of the judge and performs their routine. This may consist of tossing the baton, juggling multiple batons, marching, ballet or dance moves, or an interview. There are many different categories a twirler can enter at competitions giving them a variety of twirling routines to compete in.
The team varies from ages 3-18. The team is celebrating their 49th year as a studio and will be traveling to Disneyland Paris next year to perform for their 50th anniversary. The team has performed locally and internationally including New York City, Washington D.C., Walt Disney World, Bermuda, Ireland, and Russia.
This summer twirlers from the team will be representing the state of Massachusetts at the America’s Youth On Parade National Competition in Indiana at Notre Dame University.
The studio is under the direction of Kristina Shifres and coached by Amy Melanson, Alanna Grondine, Katie LeMasurier, and Joel Claudio.
