A former Mississippi police officer accused of fatally shooting a young mother in the back of the head was allegedly desperate to hide the affair he’d been having with the victim from his wife.
Matthew Kinne was charged with murder earlier this week in the shooting death of 32-year-old Dominque Clayton, who was found dead by her son when he arrived home Sunday afternoon. Clayton had been alone that day because all four of her children were spending the night with their uncle.
“She was having an affair with Matt, the police officer with the OPD,” the victim’s sister, Shyjuan Clayton told WHBQ.
“He bought my sister a car and kept it in his name. He was about to get her a house. He basically just didn’t want his wife to find out.”
Oxford’s interim police chief, Jeff McCutchen, requested the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation when he learned that Kinne, who served with the Oxford Police Department for four years, was possibly involved in a relationship with the victim.
“We want to assure you that we will not hide behind our badge,” he said. “Our hearts go out to the family of Dominique Clayton. To the family, we thank you for your patience and your trust in us to see this through.”
During a court appearance Wednesday, the judge revealed they were considering a “reasonable” bond for Kinne, who was fired from the Oxford Police Department earlier in the week.
McCutchen added that he’s opposed to bail for the former officer and that Kinne “needs to be in jail.”
“There is no ‘reasonable’ bond, which can be set in this case,” he said in a statement. “Matthew Kinne should not be released. He is a danger to our community and should not be released. We share in the frustrations of the community, stand with, and support the Clayton family. This is about justice for Dominique Clayton.”
Kinne remains behind bars in a neighboring county.
