Adoption Fees Waived To Clear The Shelter In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA — While Alexandria is known to have a lot of pet-owning residents, there's always room for more. Those looking to adopt a new pet have good reason to do so on Saturday, Aug. 17, when the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will hold a Clear the Shelters event.

The shelter is waiving adoption fees for all pets as part of a nationwide effort to help pets find their forever homes. AWLA will open one hour early at 11 a.m. on Aug. 17 and offer an activity tent, yard sale with discounted pet supplies, a bake sale treats and more. Donations from these events will benefit AWLA.

If you can't adopt a pet, AWLA is accepting donations to pay for food, shelter, veterinary costs and special medications.

Shelters across the country are partnering with NBC and Telemundo on the adoption drives. Adopting from shelters can reduce the number of animals being euthanized due to overcrowding. The ASPCA estimates 670,00 dogs and 860,000 cats are euthanized each year.

"Every single pet that is adopted frees shelter staff up to work with and prepare the next pet for potential adoption," said Kenny Lamberti with the Humane Society in a statement released by Clear the Shelters.
