The Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments, in partnership with Fremont County, the City of Cañon City and the Bureau of Land Management, will hold an electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Bank of the San Juans, located at Ninth Street and Royal Gorge Boulevard.

Participants should pay using cash or check, credit/debit cards will not be accepted at the event.

Enter the parking lot from Ninth Street or Eighth Street, circle around the building and enter the offload area from the south side of the building. There may be a line, participants are asked to please be patient.

  • Please stay in your vehicle. This ensures your safety and that the line moves quickly.
  • An employee will check your load and calculate the cost. They will give you a total. DO NOT pay that person. This will give you time to get your payment ready.
  • A second volunteer will take your payment; you may pay with cash and check (payable to “UAACOG.”). Credit/debit cards won’t be accepted.
  • Watch to be flagged into the offload area. Once flagged into that area, make sure that volunteers can access your recyclables. They will unload your vehicle as quickly as possible.
  • If you have a large load, please plan on coming during the first hour of the event. If you have smaller loads, please wait to come until after 10 a.m.

During the event, prices will vary, but a few examples are:  CPU’s, $5; desktop printers, $5; microwaves, $5, and fluorescent tube bulbs will be taken for a fee of 50 cents/foot. No air conditioners, freezers or refrigerators will be accepted. Televisions and monitors can be recycled for a fixed fee of $10 for LED/LCD Monitors, $20 for televisions 26” and smaller. The cost to recycle a television 27” and larger is $30. Big screen televisions can be recycled for $40. Smoke detectors can also be recycled for $5 and we will recycle cell phones and rechargeable batteries at no charge.

Colorado implemented an electronics landfill ban in July of 2013, with the passage of SB12-133. Banned electronic devices include television sets, central processing units (CPUs), computer monitors, peripherals, printers, fax machines, laptops, notebooks, ultrabooks, net books, electronic tablets, digital video-disc (DVD) players, radios, stereos, video game consoles and video display devices with screens greater than four inches diagonally. Waste electronics and computers from residential and non-residential sources cannot be disposed of in solid waste landfills in Colorado. Harmful chemicals can leach out of this waste and contaminate soil and groundwater. Electronics will be recycled by Southern Colorado Recyclers, a Colorado-registered electronics recycler, as required by Colorado law. All electronics will be recycled responsibly and all hard drives are shredded to ensure privacy.
