Woman, 61, Dies After Nassau County Blaze

Firefighters forced their way inside the home in a rescue effort, but found the woman unconscious, Nassau police said.

LEVITTOWN, NY — A 61-year-old woman died after being rescued from a burning Levittown home on Saturday, Nassau County police said.

Homicide Squad Detectives said that the fire broke out at about 11:15 a.m., and when officers arrived, they saw “heavy black smoke fully engulfing the home.” Firefighters from the Levittown Fire Department forced their way into the home, and found the woman unconscious, police said, adding, that she was later pronounced dead by a police medic.

The fire was extinguished by firefighters from four different fire agencies, including the Levittown, Bethpage, Wantagh and East Meadow fire departments, according to police.

Multiple police units also responded to the fire, a police spokesman said.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious at this time, but an investigation is ongoing, police said.
