MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, MI - A Muskegon Heights manufacturer is expanding its product line with a new production facility and up to 20 additional workers in 2018.

Hurricane Power Inc., which builds commercial-grade riding debris blowers, is planning to increase its production capacity to meet growing sales demands, according to a news release. The company is also beginning to produce a newly-patented "black blade" snowplow system designed to fit most pickup trucks available on the market.

The machines are assembled in four facilities located in Muskegon Heights, and its expanding product line has led Hurricane Power to purchase and renovate another building 2220 Temple St. in Muskegon Heights. That brings the company's local footprint up to more than 40,000 square feet.

Jon Geer, senior operations manager for Hurricane Power, said he is proud to build in Muskegon Heights, which has supported the company's momentum.

"The city has been phenomenal to work with," said Rick Weihl, owner and founder of Hurricane Power. "(City Manager Jake Eckholm) and his staff have made growing here easy and we have developed a close working relationship that will benefit everyone."

The company is also working to become a certified Veteran Friendly Employer, which will help them hire more staff through the Work Opportunity Tax Credit program.

In the last two years, Hurricane Power has gone from 12 full-time employees to more than 35. Eckholm said he was happy to see the company succeed, calling it a major driver in the local economy.

"In the short time I've been on the job I've seen them go from one building to four, add staff every quarter, and maintain a commitment to staying here in our community and helping to bring this city back to sustainability," Eckholm said. "I see them as proof positive that Muskegon Heights is a great place to start and grow a successful business, and that we at City Hall are committed to creating an environment where everyone can share in that success."

Those interested in applying for open positions can contact Hurricane Power's human resources department at (231) 755-0707, ext. 2004. Applications may also be accepted online at hurricane-power.com.
