Dan Logue, who served as the state assemblyman in the 3rd District, died on Thursday at the age of 71.

Gridley City Administrator Cliff Wagner, who worked for Logue in Sacramento when he represented Butte County, said on Facebook Friday that the former assemblyman died after a long illness.

According to Wagner‘s Facebook post, services are pending.

“I looked up to him and admired him for his unwavering commitment to conservative principles and doing the right thing,” Wagner wrote. “He was a champion who fought for the people who represented and it didn’t make a bit of difference if you shared his conservative views or if you saw the world from an entirely different perspective.”

Logue served in the seat that Assemblyman James Gallagher now has from 2009 to 2014 before he was termed out of office.

In 2008 Logue won the Republican nomination for the assembly by defeating Nevada County supervisor Sue Horn 53% to 47%. That fall he beat Mickey Harrington of Magalia by 12 points. He won his final term in 2012 defeating Democrat Charlie Rousse 56% to 44%.

In 2014, he ran for Congress against current Congressman John Garamendi, losing by five points. Ironically on Thursday, it was announced that a Republican challenging Garamendi, Tamika Hamilton, had raised more money than Garamendi. It was the first time that a Republican had raised the kind of money to compete against Garamendi since Logue did it in 2014.
