GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The county won’t foreclose on more than 3,600 properties with overdue taxes until March 31, 2021.
County Treasurer Deb Cherry requested a Genesee Circuit Court order setting the new foreclosure date because of the COVID-19 emergency. Judge Brian Pickell granted the request on Friday, April 24.
“It is important that our first priority is that Genesee County citizens stay safe and healthy," Cherry said in a news release issued by the county. “Many people are facing financial hardship and I don’t think we need to give people something else to worry about. It’s important they know their home is safe.”
The stoppage comes after Cherry said last month she would not foreclose on properties during the coronavirus pandemic. The deadline for paying 2017 tax bills otherwise would have been March 31, 2020.
Even though foreclosures will not occur this year, taxes can still be paid, the county announcement says.
“If it is at all possible, please make payments on your taxes, even if it is a partial payment,” Cherry said. “The tax bills will continue to grow so it is important to pay the taxes before the balances become too high”.
Although the county administration office is closed to the public, payments can be made online or by mail. To pay online, visit the county’s website at www.gc4me.com and select the option for online payments. If paying by mail, checks should be made payable to the Genesee County Treasurer and should be mailed to the Genesee County Treasurer, 1101 Beach St., Flint, MI 48502.
The treasurer said the parcel number or address for the property should be included with all correspondence.
