President Trump said Joe Biden has put himself in an awkward position by pledging to pick a woman as vice president and added that “some people” would suggest men might be insulted by the Democratic candidate’s intention to do so.
“I would be inclined to go a different route than what he’s done,” Trump said in an interview Tuesday on “Fox Sports Radio.” “First of all he roped himself into a certain group of people.”
“Some people would say that men are insulted by that. And some people would say it’s fine. I don’t know,” Trump continued.
Biden, who served as vice president during President Barack Obama’s two terms, committed to selecting a woman as a running mate and is expected to announce his decision as early as Tuesday or Wednesday.
He’s expected to accept the Democratic presidential nomination next Thursday in a virtual speech from Delaware.
Leading up to that decision, Biden’s campaign has assigned a number of aides to the staff of his future running mate.
Following the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, the nationwide protests it sparked and the expansion of the Black Lives Matter movement, Biden has been under pressure to name a black woman.
Sen. Kamala Harris of California, Rep. Karen Bass of California and Obama’s former national security adviser Susan Rice are reportedly on the shortlist.
Any of the three would be the first black woman nominated as vice president.
