MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDHN) – Governor Kay Ivey ordered flags to be flown at half-staff following the death of Alabama lawmaker Thad McClammy.  He died Saturday at an Atlanta hospital at the age of 78.

Rep. McClammy, a Democrat, was first elected to Alabama House District 76 in 1994.  The district encompassed a large portion of southern and southeastern Montgomery.

During his nearly 27 years inside the Alabama Legislature, Rep. McClammy served on several committees; most recently, he was chair of the Public Safety Committee of the Alabama House of Representatives.  He also served as the ranking minority member on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.

“On behalf of the state of Alabama and my colleagues in the Alabama legislature, I offer my deepest sympathies and prayers to Thad’s loved ones and his constituents,” Governor Ivey said in a memorandum late Saturday afternoon.

Flags across the state will be flown at half-staff until sunset on Sunday, Governor Ivey ordered.

The Alabama Democratic Party also remembered Rep. McClammy Saturday evening. In a Facebook post, the party said, “Thad was a great man and loyal Democrat who served his constituents well.”

“He was a great Alabamian and great legislator,” WDHN Political Analyst Steve Flowers said.  He and McClammy served in the House of Representatives together in the mid 1990s.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
