Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Police Chief Jason Lando said two men were seriously injured in the shooting and were flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Shortly after, police learned the shooting suspect drove to Fort Detrick, an Army base located less than 5 miles away.

Brig. Gen. Michael Talley, commanding general of U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command at Fort Detrick, said base personnel stopped Woldesenbet at the entrance and tried to conduct a search.

"Before he was able to be searched, he sped past the gate and made it about a half-mile into the installation," Talley said. "He was pursued immediately by the Fort Detrick Quick Reaction Force. They were able to stop him in a parking lot."

Talley added Woldesenbet then showed a gun and was subsequently shot by base police.

Authorities say they are still trying to figure out a motive.
