Suspect charged with first-degree murder after Toronto stabbing: police

Toronto police say a man has been charged with first-degree murder after a stabbing in the city’s Regent Park neighbourhood early Wednesday.

Emergency crews were called to Gerrard and River streets at around 2:29 a.m. for reports of a person with a knife.

Police told Global News Wednesday morning that there was an altercation between two men. One man was found with stab wounds and without vital signs, police said.

The man was taken to hospital with critical injuries where he died. The victim was later identified as 51-year-old Yan Qing Sun.

In a news release issued during the evening hours, officers said 34-year-old Toronto resident Shalender Singh was charged with first-degree murder.

He appeared in court Wednesday morning.
