Pat Shurmur starting life after Giants as son soaks in Super Bowl 2020 experience

Pat Shurmur was not very effusive during his short stay with the Giants, as there was not much winning and rarely much to get overly excited or animated about.

Even when his son, Kyle, was picked up by the Chiefs, Shurmur took a low-key stance, but clearly, he was brimming with pride.

Pat Shurmur lasted only two seasons, going 9-23 before the Giants fired him, and he landed in Denver as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator. Kyle Shurmur is a practice-squad quarterback with the Chiefs and thus attended the festivities Monday night at Marlins Park.

“To be a part of such a great team and such a great group of guys, it’s been fun,’’ Kyle Shurmur said. “We got one more game to go though.’’

The Giants (4-12) and Chiefs (12-4) could not have had more different seasons. Pat Shurmur was let go two years into a five-year contract and quickly found a new football home, hired by Vic Fangio in Denver.

“I’m not surprised at all,’’ Kyle Shurmur said. “He’s somebody that loves football, he eats, sleeps, breathes football. He’s a great coach. Unfortunately things didn’t work out in New York but I’m happy to see he’s back on a team and I think he’s gonna do great.’’

Kyle Shurmur said his father is eager to work with Fangio and to get to help mold young quarterback Drew Lock.

“They got some really good pieces there,’’ Kyle said. “I think he’s going to do great there. I know he’s very excited to work with Drew and I think he’s going to do a great job with him.’’

Kyle Shurmur, 23, started 44 games at Vanderbilt, throwing 64 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. He was undrafted then signed with the Chiefs as a free agent. He was cut after training camp and then signed to the practice squad. When Patrick Mahomes went down with a dislocated kneecap, Matt Moore moved in as the starter and Shurmur was signed to the active roster. He stayed there two weeks and then returned to the practice squad without getting in a game or throwing a pass.

The link to Chiefs coach Andy Reid made sense as far as Kansas City as a landing spot for Kyle Shurmur. His father got his NFL coaching start with the Eagles in 1999, when Reid was the head coach in Philadelphia.

And now, father and son are in the AFC West.

“It’s a great opportunity for him,’’ Kyle said, and then smiled. “He’s got to play the Chiefs twice a year, you know?’’
